Joey Jones was born in Llandudno, Wales and became a cult figure at Liverpool Football Club after joining from Wrexham in 1975.
Signed by Bob Paisley at age 20, Jones was an enthusiastic and fiercely competitive left-back whose uncompromising style quickly endeared him to the Anfield faithful. Although he missed out on a league winner’s medal in his first season by just one appearance, he soon established himself as a regular starter.
His defining season came in 1976-77 when Jones made 59 appearances as Liverpool clinched the First Division title and lifted their first-ever European Cup, defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach in the final.
Jones became the first Welshman to win a European Cup, and his reputation was immortalised by the legendary fan banner: “Joey Ate The Frogs Legs, Made The Swiss Roll, Now He’s Munching Gladbach.” He was integral to Liverpool’s run, showcasing relentless commitment on the biggest European stage.
Though his role diminished midway through the following season, Jones’s impact endured. He made a total of 100 appearances for the club, winning the league title, two European Cups, the UEFA Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup before returning to Wrexham in 1978.
Sadly, Joey passed away the age of 70 on 22 July, 2025.
