Former Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer believes head coach Andoni Iraola could prove instrumental in convincing Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott to make the move to Anfield during the current transfer window.
The 22-year-old midfielder featured in all but one of Bournemouth’s 38 Premier League matches last season, scoring three goals and delivering one assist as the Cherries finished in sixth position under the guidance of the Spanish manager.
Following the departure of Arne Slot, Iraola took charge at Anfield, and attention has quickly turned toward potential reunions with players who flourished under his high-pressing tactical system at his former club.
Scott has attracted intense interest from several top clubs this summer, with Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United all monitoring his situation closely.
Chelsea recently had a formal proposal rejected for the player, who is currently valued by Bournemouth at around £80m.
However, Smicer believes that the existing relationship between Iraola and the 22-year-old playmaker could prove decisive in convincing the player that his long-term future lies at Anfield rather than with rival suitors.
Speaking about the prospective deal, the 2005 Champions League winner explained that the team needs additional dynamism in the middle of the park.
“I think you can expect Andoni Iraola would like to take Alex Scott because he knows what he can do,” Smicer said.
“To be honest, in midfield we need a bit more spark with people who are fighting but are clever going forward, turning quickly with the ball and finding strikers.
“Of course, we expect a lot from Florian Wirtz to do this. But Andoni Iraola knows Alex Scott. If the price is right and he sees the possibility to strengthen the team, why not?”
Smicer also pointed to uncertainties surrounding current midfielders as a clear reason to act swiftly in the market.
“Curtis Jones is linked with a few moves, and if he leaves, we need midfield press,” he added. “We do not know what is happening with Alexis Mac Allister, he had a bit of a weak season and was not at the same level.
“Ryan Gravenberch had a good start, but then it was not the best. Only Dominik Szoboszlai was a top player in midfield for the whole season.”
With pre-season preparations entering their final phase in North America, Iraola will be keen to add proven Premier League quality to his squad before competitive action officially resumes later this month.
