Former Liverpool owner George Gillett has died at the age of 87.
The American businessman bought Liverpool Football Club with Tom Hicks in 2007 before current owners Fenway Sports Group rescued the club from bankruptcy in 2010.
One of his former sports clubs the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team, which he owned from 2001 to 2009, confirmed his passing.
“On behalf of the entire Canadiens organization, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to George’s family,” said Canadiens owner, president and CEO Geoff Molson.
“George immersed himself in the Montreal community and was appreciated by everyone in the organization. We sincerely appreciate his contributions to the Montreal Canadiens during his time as owner.”
A statement from Liverpool FC on the official website reads: “LFC sends its condolences to the Gillett family and his friends.”
