Gomez the hero as Liverpool overcome Chelsea on penalties – Watch the highlights

Liverpool booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night after winning 6-5 in a gripping penalty shootout against Chelsea at Anfield following a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

In a tactical duel pitting childhood friends Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso against one another on the touhcline, the contest exploded into life late in the first half through two penalties in quick succession.

Chelsea drew first blood in the 40th minute when Ryan Gravenberch brought down Moises Caicedo inside the box, allowing Morgan Rogers to dispatch the spot-kick past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

However, the visitors’ lead was brief. Just three minutes later, a Kostas Tsimikas corner resulted in a Wesley Fofana handball, and Cody Gakpo calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the tie.

The second half turned into a tactical scrap. While Rio Ngumoha impressed on the flank and Ronald Araujo dominated at the back, neither side could break the deadlock in open play, sending the tie straight to penalties.

The drama escalated in the shootout after seven successive penalties found the net. Valentin Barco struck the woodwork for Chelsea, only for Tsimikas to blast over the crossbar in the following penalty.

Moments later, Mamardashvili produced a crucial save from Chelsea substitute Emanuel Emegha, then up stepped Joe Gomez, who had never taken a competitive penalty for the club or even scored a goal of any kind for the Reds, to rifle his effort into the top corner.

When Fofana blazed the next kick into the Kop, Anfield erupted and a place in the quarter-finals was secured.
