Anfield welcomed the Reds back on Sunday afternoon for our first home pre-season fixture under Andoni Iraola, but a promising start ended in a frustrating 3-2 defeat against AS Monaco.
The opening half hour offered plenty of reasons for optimism. Liverpool looked sharp in transition and opened the scoring after 16 minutes when Alexander Isak swept home a fine team move.
13 minutes later, Florian Wirtz doubled our lead, scrambling the ball into the net after sustained pressure in the six-yard box.
At two goals up, the Kop was in fine voice, and Iraola’s high-pressing system looked dynamic, fluid, and full of intent.
However, the contest shifted momentum just before the break. Aleksandr Golovin drew and converted a penalty in the 44th minute to give Monaco a lifeline.
A sweeping series of squad rotations at the start of the second half disrupted our defensive cohesion, allowing the French side to take charge of the midfield.
Mika Biereth equalised in the 56th minute after a messy goalmouth struggle, highlighting early-season rustiness in our back line.
Despite energetic performances from second-half substitutes Federico Chiesa, Rio Ngumoha and new signing Victor Munoz, Monaco completed their comeback with a Paris Brunner winner in the 88th minute.
While losing at home never tastes good, context is key during summer friendlies and we shouldn’t read too much into the dip in second half performance. The primary objectives remain building match fitness and integrating tactical ideas.
The sharp link-up play between Isak and Wirtz demonstrated huge potential for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Defensive structure clearly requires further refinement on the training ground and the arrival of Ronald Araujo will likely help that, but the foundation for an exciting chapter under Iraola is plain to see and we should go into the new season with a sense of positivity.
