Liverpool fail to overcome Clarets

Liverpool’s frustrating start to 2026 continued at Anfield as they were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-threatened Burnley, marking their fourth consecutive Premier League draw.

Despite dominating possession and recording over 32 shots, 11 of which were on target, Arne Slot’s side failed to capitalise on their superiority.

The Reds had a golden opportunity to take an early lead when Cody Gakpo was fouled in the box, but Dominik Szoboszlai saw his 29th-minute penalty crash off the crossbar.

Liverpool eventually broke the deadlock just before half-time through Florian Wirtz, who fired home a powerful strike following excellent build-up play from Hugo Ekitike.

However, Burnley remained resilient and found an equaliser in the 65th minute. Marcus Edwards latched onto a through ball from Florentino Luis and clinicaly slotted his finish past Alisson Becker.

United’s victory earlier in the day means Liverpool now sit just one point ahead of their rivals in fourth place.

The result also sets a disappointing 45-year record for the club, having failed to win any of their home games against newly-promoted sides this season.
