Liverpool keen to sign Araujo in January

Liverpool could make Ronald Araujo’s loan move from Barcelona permanent as early as January.

The Uruguayan defender moved to Anfield during the summer on an initial loan arrangement that included an option buy for £47m.

Whilst he had previously established himself as a vital figure at the Camp Nou, injury troubles and declining form over the past two years prompted a decision to go out on loan.

Liverpool stepped in, bringing him on board to address their own defensive shortages.

“He is a very good person and an exceptional player, but our style of play is slightly different,” Hans Flick said at the time.

“He is a footballer with great speed and power, and he is good with the ball at his feet, too. I wanted to get him involved; I think he is eager to try new things, and I believe he has also been affected by what happened in the past.

“Liverpool is a great club, and I wish him the best. You have to accept it.”

Although naturally a central defender, Araujo has impressed at right-back throughout the opening months of the campaign for the Reds.

His strong performances have impressed fans and media alike, and led to growing calls for the club to secure his services for the long-term.

Liverpool may now bring that deal forward to the winter transfer window rather than waiting until the end of the season, allowing Barcelona to reinvest that money as they look to strengthen their own squad in the New Year.
