“You’ll Never Walk Alone” is Liverpool’s official anthem, sung by the Kop before every home game. It began as a show tune from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1945 musical Carousel, before Liverpool group Gerry and the Pacemakers took it to number one in 1963. It was played so often before kick-off at Anfield that the Kop adopted it outright, and Bill Shankly later embraced it as the club’s own. It took on deeper meaning for supporters after Hillsborough.
