Alexis Mac Allister is inching towards the end of his current Liverpool contract. He still has two years left on his current deal, but negotiations should now be taking place on a renewal.
The Argentinian midfielder spoke about the lack of activity back at the start of September.
“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which, of course, makes me very, very sad,” he said.
“Everyone can see that I give my 100% for this football club every single day in training and games.
“The fans don’t need to worry because I will give my 100% until the last day I am here.
“I love this club. I love the fans. I know very well this is an amazing club and this city has something very special. I love being here.”
Very little appears to have changed from the club’s standpoint since then, despite Mac Allister turning in top class performances week in, week out.
However, Richard Hughes has departed and been replaced by Julian Ward at the end of last month and Mac Allister’s contract situation must be high on his priority list.
He has been one of the key players driving the team in games where otherwise they may have slipped up, as he did once again when losing 2-0 to Villarreal this week, sparking the comeback to help the Reds clinch a 4-3 win at Anfield.
With four goals and one assist in 11 games, he’s shown his class.
The arrival of Andoni Iraola has given the squad a boost, no moreso that Mac Allister.
“Last year was a really difficult year for all of us,” he said. “It was clear that I was not at the level. I am the first one to say, I have no problem.
“Something wasn’t right in the group. This manager changed it, and that’s really important.
“The way we play it is quite different. I don’t like to compare. I’m feeling good, that’s what I want, and that’s what I enjoy.”
Now all we need is for the club to reward Mac Allister with a new deal, as they have with Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch. We really don’t want to be encouraging big clubs across Europe to tempt him to letting his contract run down and leaving on a free transfer, as Trent Alexander-Arnold did.
Do the right thing, Julian.
