Alexis Mac Allister says he is “very sad” at not being offered a new contract by Liverpool Football Club.
He still has almost two years left on his current contract but clearly feels that the club should be preparing an offer.
The Argentinian midfielder, speaking at the press conference ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid, expressed his disappointment when Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch were offered new deals, yet he was overlooked.
“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which, of course, makes me very, very sad,” he said.
“Everyone can see that I give my 100% for this football club every single day in training and games. Of course, I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best.
“I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it.
“At the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine. Of course, there is still time.
“The fans don’t need to worry because I will give my 100% until the last day I am here.
“We won a Premier League together, we went through difficult times together and I always give my best so we will see what happens.
“I don’t think I have to prove something – but I have to show the level I can perform and, hopefully, that’s the case.
“I love this club. I love the fans. I know very well this is an amazing club and this city has something very special. I love being here.”
Is Mac Allister surplus to requirements?
Like many other players in Arne Slot’s squad last season, Mac Allister underperformed. However, Andoni Iraola has replaced the Dutchman and quickly highlighted the key players he wanted to keep hold of.
Unfortunately, Mac Allister doesn’t appear to be one of these and his future remains in doubt.
Being involved in the Argentina players’ anti-Falklands protest after the World Cup defeat of England also turned a lot of fans against Mac Allister.
He has had a slow start to the new season, lacking concentration at times and struggling to hit the form he was showing for Argentina in the World Cup finals during the summer.
The 27-year-old was reportedly offered to Manchester City ahead of the transfer deadline last week, but there didn’t seem to be interest in him from across the East Lancs. Whether talks resume in January, we will wait and see.
