Milos Kerkez has urged Liverpool supporters to expect a return to relentless, attacking football as the squad continues its pre-season tour under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
The 22-year-old defender revealed that the coaching staff have spent the opening weeks of summer training working on an aggressive pressing system.
Following a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Premier League last season, in which the team accumulated just 60 points, the arrival of the former Bournemouth boss has brought a shift in intensity in training.
Speaking to club media in Chicago, the Hungarian international explained that the tactical instructions bear a strong resemblance to the high-tempo style that previously brought success to Anfield under Jurgen Klopp.
“I think the heavy Liverpool team that Liverpool used to be, press, front foot, everyone in front,” Kerkez said.
“Front-foot, full pressing. We build on this. Anfield, obviously, is going to push us a lot, give us also that energy. When they see us pushing a lot, they are going to give us big support home and away.”
Kerkez is particularly enthusiastic about the tactical freedom granted to full-backs within the new system. Iraola demands that his wide defenders push high up the pitch to overwhelm opposition build-up play, allowing players like Kerkez to participate directly in attacking transitions.
“The big difference is going to be, I think, the pressure, the pressing, the aggressiveness in our game this year,” he added.
“I like it. You see me higher. I can play higher, going one against one. I am really proud of everyone, and we are working really hard this pre-season.”
