Gordon deal dead

Anthony Gordon’s hopes of signing for his boyhood club appear to be dead in the water.

Liverpool were in talks with Newcastle a few weeks ago with a deal looking close, but the Magpies’ urgency to balance their books passed and they are now determined to hold onto their top players ahead of the new season.

“You know what the market is like, there will always be noise around any sort of transfer deadline,” the club’s chief executive Darren Eales told said. “For us, it was one of those situations where we knew what we had to get to.

“In the end we had to do the deals that were right for the club, that made us compliant. So, from that perspective, we did what we had to do.

“But we kept what I would say are our core players, the type of players like Isak, Gordon, Bruno, Joelinton – those players who are our core.”

The Reds have been slow to make any moves in the summer transfer window so far, with new boss Arne Slot keen to settle into his role with the current squad first. Expect activity soon though…
