Introducing our new feature writer, Sam

It’s not just Liverpool FC who have been active in the transfer window. We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to bring in fresh new writing talent with a passion for all things Red, for what promises to be an exciting season ahead. Sam Furlong is one of our new signings and we can’t wait for him to get started. In the meantime, here’s a short introductory piece from Sam…

My name is Sam, I’m 35 years old and live in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire with my wife Holly and our newborn son.

Liverpool Football Club has been a central part of my identity for as long as I can remember. My dad, originally from Bebington on the Wirral, made it clear early on that supporting anyone other than the Reds simply wasn’t an option—and it’s one of the best decisions he ever made for me. Despite being a lifelong Evertonian, my Grandad would regularly put rivalry aside and take my dad to Anfield, and so began a family tradition rooted in football and loyalty to the club.

My grandmother would frequently post me newspaper clippings, interviews, and pull-out posters from the Liverpool Echo—along with the all-important fixture wall chart, which became a staple piece of decor in my bedroom at the start of every season. These little things helped me form a deep bond not only with the club, but with my family and our shared memories of supporting Liverpool through the years.

After graduating University where I studied Journalism, I have previously worked for Watford Football Club for a short period of time where I was able to write team and player profiles for the match day programmes, as well as assisting with some online content such as interviews with the manager and players.

I jumped at the chance to be able to do something for my football club. Liverpool means more to me than just the football – it’s part of who I am. Being able to contribute about the club I love would be an absolute privilege. It would feel like a natural extension of my lifelong connection with this incredible football club. And to be able to give something back, after all it has given me, would be something I would forever be proud of.
