After Monday evening’s terrible news of a man dirivng his car into Liverpool fans at the victory parade in the city centre, we now have an update from authorities and bring you reaction from the world of football…
The police, ambuland and fire service conducted a press conference at 11pm on Monday night, adding to the original statement that a 53-year-old British man had been arrested following the incident.
We now know that 47 people were injured, 27 of which were treated in hospital, 2 seriously. Thankfully, nobody has died.
The incident is not believed to be terrorism-related and the police are not looking for anybody else in connection with the events.
Liverpool Football Club were quick to issue a statement on Monday night:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.
“We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”
Liverpool mayor Steve Rotheram was interviewed on BBC 5 Live early on Tuesday morning, praising the police response and also asking people not to spread rumours about the cause of the events at this stage.
“There’s a lot of speculation and that’s part of the problem. All those things caused real consternation, but the police acted very, very quickly to put paid to some of that speculation.
“Still four people who are very, very ill in hospital. We are hoping of course that they pull through.
“I don’t think it’s worth us speculating on what might have happened to the driver.
