Team news ahead of Sunderland clash

Arne Slot has given a fitness update ahead of Wednesday night’s Premier League game with Sunderland at Anfield.

Florian Wirtz and Joe Gomez both returned to first team action in Sunday’s 2-0 win at West Ham, while Alexander Isak is still trying to regain full match fitness, so the boss is keen to not push any of them fully on Wednesday.

“Yesterday we had recovery and after this press conference we’re going to train, so let’s see how players feel,” Slot said in Friday’s press conference.

“Florian, for example, has missed out one-and-a-half or two weeks of training, so for him to already play so many minutes was a good thing and we played again Joe Gomez, so let’s see.

“It was encouraging to see Florian playing that well, but it’s not the first time he played well for us. Maybe it was the first time other people noticed, but I’ve seen him playing well for us many times already.

“For Alex to score his first goal was also very positive. Also, a player who couldn’t play I think five to 10 more minutes than he played, because he told me yesterday he felt a little bit of cramp coming up already.

“So, another player where we should see how he does when he trains today.”

However, Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong remain sidelined.

“Conor got into a training session yesterday for the first time, team training,” added Slot. “Not everything 100% yet, we had to manage that a little bit, so don’t get your hopes up too soon, too fast. But the good thing is that he does certain parts with the group already.

“I hope he will be available for Leeds.

“And we expect the same with Jeremie next week, so the two of them come back but unfortunately we play a lot of games, so Jeremie, if he is training with us next week, will miss out on three more games, for example. But the two of them are coming back.”
