Starting from the upcoming 2026/27 season, English football is trialling a new rule to stop teams using fake goalkeeper injuries to waste time or receive tactical advice.
If play stops for a goalkeeper injury, the team’s manager must immediately choose one outfield player to step off the pitch.
The nominated player must then stay off the pitch for at least one minute of active play after the restart.
However, the new rule won’t apply if a free-kick is awarded for a foul on the goalkeeper and they immediately require treatment, or if the goalkeeper and an outfield player have collided and need attention, or if the goalkeeper is bleeding.
Why the Change?
The trial, approved by IFAB and supported across English professional leagues, aims to protect genuine medical care while removing any unfair sporting advantage gained by tactical stoppages.
