Virgil van Dijk had only one emotion after Liverpool lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal on Sunday evening.
“Disappointment. We played at home, we had some opportunities,” he said after the game. “Obviously we tried everything.
“I think we could have maybe done a bit better towards the last 15 minutes of the game to get more balls in the box. But it wasn’t enough today and that’s why disappointment is definitely the feeling I’m having.
“When we conceded the goal, after that we started to play much better. We created the big chance of Alexis and it could have changed the game. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.
“But obviously we all know that in the second half anything can still happen. We kept pushing, we kept going for it.”
One clear chance Liverpool had to equalise was when Alexander Isak had his shirt pulled when stretching for a header on goal. The referee saw it, despite Isak not reacting to the foul, but VAR decided it wasn’t a penalty.
“I think it was also a clear penalty. I’ve seen it back and I’ve seen it being given as well on other occasions, but today it wasn’t meant to be.
“Why does he have to complain when there are so many cameras? It is spotted because everyone has seen it. In the end, obviously it wasn’t given. We lose the game, unfortunately.
“Well done to Arsenal.”
The results sees Liverpool drop to fifth in the Premier League table, although such a narrow defeat to the champions isn’t something to be embarrassed about.
Liverpool had plenty of chances and controlled the play for much of the game, pinning Arsenal back throughout the second half.
The only concern will be the lack of shots on target – zero! For a side with three attacking players each worth over £100m that is poor. We were lacking that killer instinct in front of goal.
