Liverpool’s summer transfer window has been busy, exciting and full of intent ahead of the new season. The club have wasted no time in rebuilding the squad with the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike highlighting the ambition that Arne Slot has of defending their title.
And with a few weeks of the window still remaining, it appears the business may be far from over for the Reds when it comes to both outgoings and incomings.
One position which will surely need strengthening is in the heart of the defence, where currently there are only two senior fit centre-backs available in captain Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
Joe Gomez picked up an Achilles injury during the pre-season tour of Asia an, with Jarell Quansah departing for Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the window, it leaves the club short of cover in the centre-half position.
One player who’s been heavily linked with a switch to Anfield is Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace captain is into the final year of his contract, meaning Palace face a dilemma of losing him next summer for nothing if a deal cannot be done this summer.
Currently it’s understood that Guehi may be happy to see out his contract at Selhurst Park, however if a reasonable bid were to come in for the England centre half, it may be too good to turn down.
If a deal for Guehi doesn’t materialise this summer, here are a few other alternatives that Liverpool could consider bringing to Anfield this window:
Castello Lukeba – A left footed centre half who has impressed during his time at RB Leipzig. The Frenchman is comfortable with ball at feet, and shows defensive maturity already at the age of 22. Could be seen as a long term Van Dijk replacement when the time comes.
Charlie Cresswell – Following an impressive England U21 campaign earlier in the summer, Cresswell may fancy playing in the Premier League following a successful spell in France with Toulouse. Another youngster with a high ceiling, Cresswell is a cheaper alternative to the other options, but has potential to be a success in the top flight.
Piero Hincapie – links to the Ecuadorean international never seem to go away. Able to operate at both centre half and left back, Hincapie would offer Slot great versatility at the back. After limited playing time last season at Leverkusen, he perhaps could be open to a move – however selling a third high profile player to Liverpool in one window might be one too many for the German side.
We’ve still got an interesting few weeks left of this transfer window.
