The Reds return to Premier League action this weekend, taking on newly-promoted Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon.
Following what felt like a long international break, Arne Slot will be looking for his side to continue their winning ways by leaving Lancashire with all 3 points and remaining as the front runners in this season title race.
It is also an opportunity for new record signing Alexander Isak to make his debut for his new club, after finally ending the saga of the summer with his deadline day move from Newcastle United.
With new signings in mind ahead of the Burnley trip, it got me thinking about players who have worn the shirts of both clubs over the years, sometimes with differing levels of impact and success. Let’s take a look at some of those players.
Peter Crouch
Perhaps the most well-known player among this group, how could Crouchy not get a mention? Joining Liverpool in 2005 he became a cult hero for his unorthodox style and knack of scoring important and also spectacular goals – a perfect hat-trick against Arsenal as well as one in the Champions League against Beskitas to name a few. Crouch helped the Reds to an FA cup in his first season, whilst notching up over 130 appearances during his time at Anfield. It was during his twilight years that he made the move to Burnley in 2019, where after a brief stay he retired from the game.
Danny Ings
It proved to be a case of what might have been for Danny Ings during his time at Anfield. Moving from Burnley in 2015, there’s no denying Ings knew where the goal was, with a very impressive goal-scoring record at Turf Moor. Sadly, injuries hampered his time on Merseyside meaning limited game time, and eventually a move away. He found goals again during his time at Southampton, and later Aston Villa, but he will ultimately be remembered more fondly for his time at Turf Moor.
Jon Flanagan
Once touted as the clubs next great full back, Flanagan came through the academy and broke into the first team during the 2013-14 season, playing a key role in the near-title run for Brendan Rodgers side that season – who could forget his goal against Spurs at White Hart Lane? Similarly to Danny Ings, progress was cut short due to injuries, and he joined Burnley on loan in 2016 but struggled to make an impact. Moves to Scotland and Denmark followed, but he was unable to rediscover that form from his early Liverpool days.
Jonjo Shelvey
Moving from Charlton to Anfield in 2010, Shelvey was a young midfielder with a big reputation and a lot of promise. With a playing style that some compared to Steven Gerrard, Shelvey’s talent was always evident, but he often found himself on the fringes of the starting 11, during what was a transitional period for the club. Three years later he moved to Swansea in search for regular first team action. After a spell in Turkey, Shelvey made the move to Burnley in 2025 only to end up not playing a game for the Clarets, and leaving months later when his contract expired.
