As a wonderful season draws to a close

So what a season this has been! Winning the league with games to spare, finishing the season as one long party. I’ve liked the idea of loving watching our goals, but hardly caring a jot when any opposition score.

To be truthful, I do miss competitive footy, and I’m already dreading the summer. Not even a tournament to bridge the gap. You can’t beat the anticipation of the Mighty Reds playing, waiting for team news an hour before. Then the buzz of the game, and putting out my personal ratings after. Of course there’s not just our games to look forward to, but anyone near us in the league, plus the usuals like Man Utd and Everton. I’ll even squeeze interest and watch games with players in my Fantasy Football team.

My Mrs is great. ‘I’ve gotta watch football tonight – Bryan Mbuemo is playing’. The truth is I’ll watch any football- women’s if I’m really desperate and there’s nothing else on.

But a whole summer without? What on earth am I going to do? For a start I’ll probably look at Twitter (sorry I’m not having ‘X’) at our potential transfers. Usually lads I’ve never heard of, who we convince ourselves are amazing ‘cos of a few video clips. Why do I even look when these ‘In The Know’ sites have no more inside information than I do? Because I’m totally obsessed with this team, our amazing club, and this obsession refuses to disappear even when there isn’t a player in sight.

On a slightly different matter, I wrote an article a good few weeks ago suggesting we should give Trent a reasonable send off. A pal asked me if I’ve changed my mind – I think that’s a ‘yes’. I did like the fact that he looked so miserable in front of our end at Brighton, as they sung their jubilant songs and simply ignored him! What kind of doctor does that make me? He’s not on my patient list I suppose.

So, onto Sunday. I did my dosh getting Spurs tickets for me and my lads, so I won’t be at Anfield for the Palace game.

Going to the Tottenham game fulfilled my lifetime dream of seeing us win the League with my lads. I’ve seen us win it loads in the 80’s and they’ve been incredibly patient. What a day! We got to the ground hours early and waited patiently by the King Harry pub. I did wonder how on earth the bus would eventually get through, there were so many of us. To be honest the five minutes when the bus came through was a bit much for me, being the old git that I am; crushed somewhat, while choking on the fumes of the flares with burning eyes and a cinder on my forehead! It did feel a bit worrying like at the final in Paris in 2022, but it was fine, and the lads loved it. The game itself played out perfectly, even them scoring first. It gave a slight feeling of concern, making it so much better when we scored.

One final note. Thursday’s Europa final was a laugh. I’ve never enjoyed such an awful game so much. And United lost – so they’re not coming back any time soon which is great!

So thanks for reading.
Bring on the Champions!
