Martin Zubimendi’s decision to reject a £51m move to Liverpool in favour of remaining at Real Sociedad has surprised many and annoyed quite a few more.
We thought this was going to be the big deal after a summer of inactivity on the transfer market (if you disregard the on-off Anthony Gordon fiasco) and it hurts to think that a player wouldn’t want to move to Anfield.
However, much of the build up has been generated by the fans themselves, urging the club to sign a big name. The press, always eager to jump on the opportunity to sell more newspapers, ran with it and created a bit of a frenzy.
Photoshop ‘artists’ creatively stitched his head onto Liverpool players’ bodies to help us imagine what we would be seeing when the season kicks off at the weekend.
Arne Slot remained tight-lipped throughout, knowing deep down that Zubimendi isn’t needed. He showed on Sunday that the club already have two squads’ worth of players eager for a game and the addition of a top-class Spanish midfielder would have just been a bonus.
Don’t be too downhearted by the Zubimendi news. There is still plenty of time in the transfer window to satisfy the appetite of transfer-hungry fans!
