Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo have officially returned to the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday to kick off their pre-season preparations.
The Dutch international duo were given an extended period of leave following their commitments at the World Cup in North America, but they have now reported back to Kirkby to undergo physical testing and light conditioning work.
The two were pictured arriving at the facility on Tuesday morning, greeting staff members before heading into the gym for physical assessments.
While a large portion of the first-team squad is currently in the USA with newly-appointed head coach Andoni Iraola, the returning players will initially follow individualised programmes alongside specialised fitness coaches as they ease themselves back into training, before flying out to join the rest of the squad at their base in Chicago.
Speaking to club media upon his arrival at the training ground, Van Dijk expressed his eagerness to begin work ahead of the upcoming campaign.
“It is always good to be back after a break,” he said. “The summer gave us some time to rest and clear our minds after an intense tournament, but now the focus turns entirely to the hard work ahead.
“We know that there are fresh ideas being introduced by the new manager, and we are looking forward to linking up with the rest of the group very soon.”
The return of the Dutch pairing provides a timely boost for Iraola, who is preparing his side for five exhibition matches across the Atlantic before the domestic season officially kicks off.
