Ibrahim Mbaye to Liverpool?

Liverpool have reportedly agreed personal terms on a five-year contract with Paris St-Germain forward Ibrahim Mbaye.

The club’s transfer strategy has often leaned into identifying exceptional young talent before their valuation reaches astronomical heights and Mbaye is a teenage sensation whose rapid emergence in France has alerted top clubs around Europe.

The youngster, who made waves by breaking through into PSG’s senior setup at just 16 years old, is widely regarded as one of the most promising wide prospects developed at the Camp des Loges in recent years. A such, the French club are reportedly valuing him around £50m.

The transfer makes strategic sense for the Reds as long as the price is right.

As the club plans for long-term succession in their attacking ranks, recruiting an 18-year-old with Mbaye’s quality is a no-brainer.

His style of play suits Andoni Iraola’s high-intensity, vertical pressing system, where wingers are required to contribute defensively while offering a constant counter-attacking outlet.

Prising talent away from Paris is rarely straightforward. The French champions are eager to build an identity around homegrown Parisian stars and have demonstrated a willingness to offer first-team pathways to academy graduates, such as Xavi Simons and Senny Mayulu.

Securing Mbaye would require a compelling pitch from Liverpool, offering regular European football and a clear route to becoming a first-team regular.

Whether a formal move materialises in the upcoming window remains to be seen.

While the player may be happy with what Liverpool are prepared to offer with regards personal terms, agreeing a fee with PSG is going to be tougher.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes often likes to drag these negotiations out, especially as the club are also keen to sign Bradley Barcola from PSG.

His valuation at around £140m is ridiculous, so there’s going to have to be a great deal of movement for that to happen, but maybe a double deal might be an option.

Expect this one to run right until the transfer window closes on Tuesday 1st September.
