Joe Gomez admits uncertainty over Liverpool future

Liverpool’s longest-serving player, Joe Gomez, has cast doubt on his future at the club as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract.

The versatile defender, who joined the Reds as a teenager back in 2015, has seen his game time limited this season despite a raft of injuries across the backline.

Gomez was candid about the possibility of a summer exit, stating that he does not know what the future holds but remains grateful for his decade long stint on Merseyside.

“I think anything can happen, I don’t know is the honest answer,” he admitted. “I’ve only got a year left so I don’t know but whatever is meant to be will be, I guess.

“But I’m so grateful to have had this time here at this club. I’ll always be grateful to have had 11 years at a place like this. All I can do is be thankful and we’ll see.”

The 28 year old has been the subject of interest from several clubs over the past year, with Brighton and AC Milan both previously linked with a move for the England international.

Liverpool’s defensive ranks are expected to undergo a shake up this summer, with Jeremy Jacquet expected to be fit for the start of next season and Ibrahima Konate set to sign a new long-term deal.

With the club also expecting Giovanni Leoni to return from a serious knee injury, Gomez may find himself further down the pecking order in Arne Slot‘s plans for the 2026/27 campaign.

Losing Gomez would represent another blow to the club’s domestic core and leadership group. Having survived multiple managerial changes and overcome several career threatening injuries, he has been a dependable figure for the Reds across multiple positions.

However, the desire for regular first team football ahead of his peak years may prove the deciding factor. If a suitable offer arrives this summer, Liverpool may be inclined to sell rather than risk losing him for free in twelve months’ time.

For fans, the potential departure of a player who has been part of the club’s modern golden age would be a bittersweet moment, highlighting the scale of the rebuild currently underway at Anfield.
