Liverpool v PSG: Head-to-Head Stats Preview

We look ahead to Tuesday night’s Champions League quarter-final second-leg at Anfield, as Liverpool attempt to turn around a 2-0 deficit from last week’s game in Paris.

We crunch the numbers ahead of the big game…

None of the seven meetings between Liverpool (3 wins) and Paris St Germain (4) in all competitions have been drawn, with two of the Reds’ three wins coming at home.

PSG won 1-0 at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League last 16 last season. The only sides to win consecutive away games against Liverpool in European competition are Barcelona and Atalanta, with neither of those doing so in back-to-back campaigns.

This will be the fifth time that Liverpool have hosted the reigning champions from the previous season’s UEFA Champions League. They lost each of the first three (twice to Real Madrid and once to Barcelona), but won the most recent and only one they have played under Arne Slot (2-0 v Real Madrid in November 2024).

Before this season’s quarter-finals, there have been 17 occasions of a team being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League knockout stages despite having a 2+ goal lead from the first leg – Paris SG have been on the receiving end of this more than any other side (3 times).

Liverpool have lost four games in the UEFA Champions League this season, their joint-most in a single campaign (also 2006-07 and 2018-19). The last time they lost four was 2018-19 – they went on to win the trophy that season, and it’s also the only time they’ve overturned a 2+ goal deficit from the first leg to progress (vs Barcelona in the semi-final).

Liverpool have scored 24 goals from an expected goals total of 27.8 in the UEFA Champions League this season, the biggest underperformance of any of the remaining sides (3.8). Meanwhile, only Atletico Madrid (9.9) and Barcelona (8.9) have overperformed their xG more than Paris SG this term (8.4 – 36 goals from 27.6 xG).

Florian Wirtz has created more chances from open play than any other player in the UEFA Champions League this season (28). Teammate Dominik Szoboszlai has created more chances from set play than anyone else (14), while no player has created more big chances than Mohamed Salah (8).
