The race to sign Florian Wirtz is hotting up. The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder looks almost certain to leave this summer, but the German club’s eye-watering £126m asking price is sorting the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.
Manchester City had been interested, but appear to have cooled because of the price tag, leaving just Bayern Munich and Liverpool as serious contenders.
Leverkusen have refused to sell a player to their Bundesliga competitors for over 20 years. However, Liverpool may be a good fit, but such a signing would smash the transfer record set when the club signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica for €85m in 2022.
To soften the blow, it may be possible that a swap deal is agreed. Leverkusen have previously expressed an interest in Tyler Morton and are also reportedly keen on Jarell Quansah. After having already negotiated the imminent transfer of Jeremie Frimpong, could Wirtz become Arne Slot’s next summer signing?
