On a night full of emotion and drama, Liverpool kicked off their Premier League title defence with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield – a result that felt both a relief and a sign of things to come for Reds fans.
The match began with touching tributes to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, lost tragically in July, as Anfield sang in unified memory and held up mosaics for the brothers, while Liverpool players wore black armbands.
Hugo Ekitike announced himself in style on his debut, bursting through the defence to make it 1-0 on 37 minutes. The noise was deafening as newcomer Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong slotted into the side, showing early chemistry.
Just after halftime, Ekitike turned creator for Cody Gakpo to double the lead, sending the Kop wild and seeming to put the match beyond doubt.
But Bournemouth, and especially Antoine Semenyo, refused to roll over. The Cherries countered with two in 12 minutes – Semenyo’s brace stunning Anfield and levelling the score.
Liverpool’s defence looked fragile at times as fans worried that opening-day nerves might spoil the celebration.
Arne Slot made crucial substitutions and, in the final ten minutes, Federico Chiesa volleyed in at the Kop end for 3-2 before Mohamed Salah put the game to bed in added time.
The tension gave way to euphoria, and a chorus of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, as Salah clinched it and Liverpool claimed three vital points.
It wasn’t perfect defensively, but the attacking promise, emotional resolve and big-game mentality showed why Liverpool remain title favourites. For the faithful, it was a fitting tribute, a thrilling watch, and – above all – a win to savour.
