Ibrahima Konate has left the building

After what has become a whole year of ‘Will he? Won’t he?’, it has been officially announced that Ibrahima Konate will sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer.

The Spanish club has issued a statement” “Real Madrid CF and Ibrahima Konate have reached an agreement whereby he will be a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030.”

It brings to an end a period of doubt that was partly responsible for Liverpool’s defensive issues last term.

Many would say that Konate started the season in a different mindset. He lacked focus, prompting questions about his desire to remain at the club as he went into the final season of his contract. Rumours of interest from Real Madrid and PSG swirled around at a time when the club needed him to knuckle down and help shore up the back line.

By the time the January transfer window came, it definitely looked like he had agreed a move to Spain and was holding out for a free move in the summer, as had happened to Trent Alexander-Arnold the previous year.

Something seemed to change at the end of January, though. Konate’s father sadly passed away following a prolonged illness. Liverpool supported the player fully through the difficult time, allowing him as much time off as he needed.

When Konate did return he was welcomed back warmly by the fans and went on to score an emotional goal against Newcastle, bringing him to tears and most of us watching too. He went on to declare his desire to remain a Liverpool player.

Fast forward four months and his head had been turned again, despite assurances from the player that he was ‘close to an agremeent’.

However, as the season drew to a close and no new deal signed, Konate became an easy target for Real. It was only a matter of time before he made the switch and that time has come.

We wish Ibou all the very best for the future, but we now look ahead to a new era under Andoni Iraola and the hope we can bring in a centre-back that can improve on what we had last season.
