Jordan Henderson was booed by sections of Anfield during Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash, and the former Reds captain has admitted the reception left him hurt.
Henderson, who spent 12 years on Merseyside and lifted the Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup as captain, returned to his old stomping ground wearing the blue of Chelsea.
It was always going to be an awkward evening for a man who gave so much to the club, and the noise from the stands made that very clear.
“It never occurred to me”
Speaking about the reaction, Henderson was clearly upset.
“I have stood by this club through periods of immense pressure, criticism, and great difficulty,” he said.
“I have celebrated with the fans as we won major trophies. I dedicated years of my playing career to Liverpool, and it never occurred to me that one day I would return to this stadium, only to feel that those memories no longer hold any meaning for some people.”
He also appealed directly to supporters not to forget what he helped the club achieve.
“You don’t have to love me, now that I play for Chelsea, but please don’t erase all the history I created with Liverpool just because I’m wearing a different-coloured shirt today,” he added.
He also made clear that, despite the jeers, his respect for Liverpool remains. “I will always respect Liverpool, but I’d be lying if I said tonight didn’t break my heart a little bit.”
A divisive return
Henderson’s relationship with the Anfield faithful has been complicated since his departure from the club, and his time since has done little to settle opinion.
For some, the trophies and the captaincy will always outweigh everything that came after. For others, the way his Liverpool story ended means he is now simply an opponent.
Booing a former player is hardly new in football, but it rarely sits comfortably when the player in question led the club to the biggest honours in its modern history. It’s not the Liverpool way. Whether you think the reaction was fair or not, Henderson’s comments show it clearly landed.
What do you think?
Were the boos justified, or should Henderson have been shown more respect for what he achieved for the Reds? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
