Liverpool FC: 25 for 25

With 2025 drawing to a close, it’s been an eventful year for Liverpool both on and off the football pitch. Champions of England in May, the tragic loss of Diogo Jota in July, and an inconsistent start to the title defence this campaign, there’s been plenty of talking points and highlights to look back on. Here are a few that I have compiled as we look ahead to the new year.

1. Nunez Brentford Brace
Two late goals off the bench from substitute Darwin Nunez secured all 3 points for the Reds at Brentford, extending our lead at the top of the table at the start of the year.

2. Feisty Goodison Derby
It was a memorable final Derby at Goodison Park, not just for the last minute Tarkowski equaliser in a 2-2 draw, but for Curtis Jones defending the Liverpool fans following taunts from Abdoulaye Doucoure at full time. A good old fashioned melee followed, as well as red cards for Jones and Slot.

3. Dominant display at the Etihad
A commanding and solid performance away at Manchester City which opened up an 11 point lead at the top. Goals from Salah and Szoboszlai were enough to down the champions that day.

4. Elliot’s Parisian Smash and Grab
Alisson kept us in the game with one of the best goalkeeping performances the Champions League has ever seen, and with only our second shot of the night, Harvey Elliot secured the win in Paris with his first touch of the ball. Sacre Bleu!

5. Record Breaking Mo
His two penalties against Southampton moved Salah up to third place on the all-time Liverpool goal scorers list – only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt have more goals than Salah’s 250 in a red shirt.

6. Jota Derby Winner
Jinking past challenges and finishing with a flourish, Jotas goal was pivotal in the title race, not just to beat Everton but to move us closer to the title. A poignant and special goal as it would end up being his last.

7. VVD’s West Ham Winner
When it looked like it was going to be one of those frustrating afternoons, up stepped the skipper in the 89th minute to score the winner against West Ham, moving us closer to title number 20. Captain fantastic.

8. Salah and Virgil securing their contracts
Following the high profile contract saga involving Trent, it would have been disastrous to lose both Salah and Van Dijk on frees in the same window. Fortunately the pair of them decided to extend their stays at Anfield, putting pen to paper on two year deals respectively.

9. Trent’s Last Hurrah
We all know how this story ended, however uncertainty surrounding his future didn’t stop Trent coming off the bench at Leicester to score a late winner, putting us one win away from the title.

10. Title clinched in style against Spurs
A 5-1 thumping at home against Tottenham secured title number 20, and in some style. The match will be remembered for Alexis Mac Allister’s rocket to make it 2-1, followed by a Salah selfie in the Kop End. What a way to do it.

11. Slot in Ibiza
Winning the title in a foreign country at the first time of asking is certainly cause for celebration, but I don’t think anyone had Arne Slot partying at Ocean Beach with Wayne Lineker on their 2025 bingo cards – especially considering the season hadn’t ended! Can we blame him really?

12. Birth of my little Red
A personal highlight of the year for me was the birth of our first child. Our son was born in May, and two days later we got our hands on the title. I had to wait 30 years to witness my first league title, so he can consider himself a very lucky baby!

13. Lifting the title
A double guard of honour with FA Cup winners Crystal Palace at Anfield on a day of celebration – culminated by getting our hands on the Premier League trophy. Number 20 was secure. Back on our perch. Sadly, the victory parade was marred by an idiot in a car. but he got justice in the end.

14. Remembering Diogo Jota
A moment we will all remember but for all the wrong reasons. The tragic and shocking passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva united the footballing world together in grief. The number 20 shirt being retired in his honour, there will never be another at the club. Better than Figo don’t you know…

15. Liverpool FC Online
Allow me to include another personal highlight if you will! When I saw the post on X asking whether anyone wished to write some online content, I didn’t think twice – it’s slightly out of my comfort zone, having not done anything journalism related for some time, but the chance to contribute something for the club and fellow fans is something that I am forever grateful for.

16. Summer spending spree
It was a transfer window for the ages. Never have we spent so much on signings, but i feel that it was long overdue. Isak and Wirtz being the marquee names who came in, costing just shy of £250 million together. Though some may question the amount of money spent, it would be more prudent to view it as long term planning for the squad, whilst also trying to compete in a league where everyone else strengthened.

17. Return to Adidas
The move from Nike back to Adidas merchandise was welcomed by players and fans alike. The new kits have a blend of tradition and style – arguably the most popular in the sea green third kit, which nods to the retro Trefoils design – 90’s nostalgia at its best. A boss kit.

18. Chiesa lift off
The Italian’s late goal on the opening night of the campaign against Bournemouth was a special way to start the season. Such a popular fan favourite who arguably doesn’t get enough game time, Chiesa took his chance that night – if Anfield had a roof, it would have come off.

19. Emotional Mo
Salah’s tears in front of the Kop at full time on the opening night spoke volumes. Footballers are human too, they will grieve and show emotion. For Salah this was the night. The Kop in full voice singing the name of his friend and colleague, not a dry eye in the house.

20. Szoboszlai free kick v Arsenal
It was going to take something special to beat David Raya from distance, and it certainly was special. Dominik Szoboszlai’s worldie free kick would have beaten any goalkeeper. A sweet strike made even sweeter with 3 points in the end.

21. Isak’s first goal
The club-record signing opened his account for the Reds in League Cup action against Southampton at Anfield and, whilst it was a slightly fortunate goal following a Saints error, the Swede wouldn’t have cared and the fans didn’t either.

22. Introducing Rio Ngumoha
The teenager showed promise in cup competition last season, and was given his chance off the bench against Newcastle to show what he could do. Grabbing a later winner with a clinical finish to secure 3 points at St James Park will live long in the memory. Hopefully there is more to come.

23. Beating Real Madrid at Anfield
Real Madrid are always daunting opposition for anyone, even more so when your form wasn’t the best. But it was an accomplished and professional performance against our old European rivals, with an Alexis Mac Allister header enough on the night to secure a 1-0 win.

24. Impact of Hugo Ekitike
With the arrival of Alexander Isak receiving more coverage and fanfare, it’s his forward partner Ekitike who came in and has hit the ground running. 8 goals already alongside some eye-catching performances, the Frenchman has already established himself as a fan favourite at Anfield. Keep the goals coming!

25. Another Salah Record
The Egyptian King added another record to his personal achievements, following his assist against Brighton. Salah now has the most goals and assists combined whilst playing for a single club – 277 goals and assists for Liverpool. Big numbers.
