Aston Villa join the race for Joe Gomez

Liverpool’s defensive depth is set to be tested at Anfield this summer as Aston Villa have joined the race to sign long-serving defender Joe Gomez.

The 29-year-old England international found starting minutes hard to come by under Arne Slot this season, often acting as a rotation option behind Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

With Villa securing a Champions League berth, Unai Emery is reportedly keen to add Gomez’s versatility and elite European experience to his backline.

Gomez is also attracting attention from abroad, with AC Milan and Besiktas registering a concrete interest in his situation.

Having been at Anfield since 2015, Gomez is currently the club’s longest-serving senior player following the departures of Mo Salah and Andy Robertson, famously never scoring a goal in his career… so far.

However, with the player entering his peak years and eager for regular first-team football to protect his international status, Richard Hughes faces a difficult decision.

Selling Gomez would generate a healthy profit for the transfer kitty, but it would leave Liverpool desperately short of experienced backup defenders going into the new season.
