Klopp reveals how Liverpool nearly signed Mbappe

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken about the time the club came close to signing Kylian Mbappe.

The French striker was a teenager playing in a top-class Monaco side at the time.

Mbappe’s other, Fayza Lamari, is famously a Liverpool fan and her son came close to signing for the Reds in 2017.

“With Mbappe, it was before he went to Paris,” said Klopp. “That was roughly €500m, the most expensive non-transfer we’ve ever made.

“We flew from Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the whole Mbappe family boarded a private jet with five cabins.

“Then we flew around in circles and had a delicious meal. We weren’t allowed to be seen.

“It was great… and then he went to Paris.”

Mbappe joined Paris St-Germain on loan in August 2017 before signing permanently for €180m the following year, before forcing a move to Real Madrid in 2024, annoying a lot of PSG fans in the process
