Liverpool hijack Chelsea move for Jeremy Jacquet

In a dramatic Transfer Deadline Day twist, Liverpool have successfully hijacked Chelsea’s pursuit of Jeremy Jacquet.

The 20-year-old Rennes defender had been a primary target for the Blues throughout January, but Liverpool moved aggressively over the weekend to agree a deal valued at an initial £55m plus add-ons. The French youth international has signed a pre-contract agreement and is expected to join Arne Slot’s squad permanently this summer.

Reports suggest that Man Utd also made a last-minute attempt to scupper the transfer on Sunday evening, but Jacquet had already committed to the Reds.

The signing is a major statement of intent from the club, who have prioritised a defensive rebuild following a series of injury crises this season.

Jacquet is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest prospects, and is expected to replace Ibrahima Konate, who is believed to be on his way to Real Madrid at the end of the season.
