Premier League rule changes for next season

The Premier League has confirmed a series of rule changes for the 2026-27 season. These adjustments aim to combat time-wasting and improve officiating accuracy during matches.

One of the most noticeable updates targets slow restarts. Officials will implement a strict five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal-kicks. If a player clearly delays the game and exceeds this limit, a restart reversal occurs. The opposing team will receive the throw-in, or a corner if the delay happened during a goal-kick.

Substitutions are also getting a strict timer. Players will have just 10 seconds to leave the field. If they take longer, the incoming substitute will be blocked from entering the pitch until the first stoppage after one full minute has passed. This rule will heavily penalise teams attempting to run down the clock late in matches.

The Premier League is also adjusting how on-field injuries are handled. Any player who receives treatment or assessment on the pitch must now remain off the field for at least one minute. This is a notable increase from the previous 30-second rule, designed to ensure player safety while further discouraging tactical injury delays.

Finally, VAR will see an expansion in scope. It will now review instances where a second yellow card is awarded to a player, which then results in a red card. This specific review only applies when a second booking is actually given, not for missed potential bookings.

These changes promise to bring greater urgency and fairness when the new season kicks off.
