Dominik Szoboszlai did his homework

Dominik Szoboszlai scored the opening goal in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 win over Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

His clever, low free kick went under the jumping wall and into the corner of the net, giving the Reds the advantage just before half time.

As he ran off in celebration the Hungarian midfielder tapped the side of his head with his finger – a clear indication that he had been smart and fully prepared for the move.

“Yeah, I did my homework,” he said after the game. “I got told that if no-one is lying down maybe I can have a chance to hit it under the wall and no-one was laying down so I tried it, and it worked out.”

“It’s very good, I’m very happy. It’s really tough, we knew it before, especially with this team, with this coach.

“We know what they are able to do and what he is able to do, we saw it in the Premier League when we played against Brighton, but we knew we were prepared and we take the three points.”

The victory leaves Arne Slot’s side in a strong position with regard to securing automatic qualification for the Round of 16 in the tournament.

A home win over Qarabag next Wednesday would guarantee their place in the top eight of the league phase.
