The Netherlands were knocked out of the World Cup by Morocco on penalties on Monday, but it was an emotional night for Cody Gakpo.
After his partner Noa van der Bij, announced that the couple had lost their unborn baby on Saturday, it was a surprise to see the Liverpool forward selected for the Round of 32 game but he was determined to remain with the squad.
Gakpo opened the scoring on the 72nd minute, with a great breakaway goal and promptly broke down in tears as his teammates gathered around him.
Morocco equalised in added time and went on to win the penalty shoot-out, in which both teams missed four penalties.
It means an early return for pre-season training for Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch, although Gakpo will no doubt be given more time off.
