It was a sad day for football as mourners congregated at Igreja de Matriz church in Diogo Jota and Andre Silva’s home town of Gondomar in Portugal for the funeral of the brothers who died in a car crash on Thursday.
Past and present Liverpool players and staff joined mourners for the service on Saturday morning, with Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson carrying floral tributes displaying the squad numbers of the two footballers.
The club have announced that Jota’s number 20 shirt number will be retired in tribute to the player and that the remainder of his contract continue to be paid to his family.
It’s a huge loss felt by all connected with Diogo and the clubs and teams he has played for over the years, from Paços de Ferreira to Porto, Wolves, Liverpool and the Portuguese national side.
Liverpool have delayed preparations for their pre-season programme and have also been in contact with the FA and Crystal Palace to arrange a tribute to Jota ahead of the Community Shield at Wembley next month.
