Origi calls it a day

Former Liverpool striker Divock Origi has retired from professional football at the age of 31.

For Liverpool fans, Origi was far more than a squad player. He was the man for the big moment and time and again, when the pressure was at its highest, the Belgian striker delivered.

His unforgettable brace against Barcelona in the miraculous 4-0 Champions League semi-final comeback at Anfield in 2019 remains one of the greatest performances in the club’s modern history and one that no Liverpool fan will ever forget.

Just weeks later, he scored Liverpool’s second goal in the Champions League final against Tottenham, helping bring Old Big Ears back to Anfield for a sixth time.

Origi scored 41 goals in 175 appearances for Liverpool and played his part in winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Yet statistics alone do not explain why he is so adored by Reds supporters.

Whether it was his last-minute winner in the Merseyside derby, crucial goals in title races, or his remarkable ability to appear from nowhere and change a match, Origi became a symbol of belief and resilience at a time when the club were needing to dig in to claim valuable results. Former manager Jurgen Klopp famously described Origi as a Liverpool legend, and few supporters would disagree.

Origi announced his retirement on social media, saying: “My purpose in the game is fulfilled. I lived out my childhood dreams, played on the biggest stages, won the biggest trophies.

“Grateful to God for all of it.

“To all my fans, the clubs, my teammates and my family: this will forever be ours. Thank you.

“The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling. More of the journey to come.”

Football will remember Divock Origi as a Champions League winner. Liverpool fans will remember him as something even more special. He was the ultimate cult hero whose greatest moments will never be forgotten by Reds all over the land.
