Van Dijk speaks out about Konate contract situation

Virgil van Dijk says he wants Ibrahima Konate to stay at Liverpool, amid ongoing rumours that the French defender may be off to Real Madrid.

After a sluggish start to the season, when many believed Konate was just running down his contract ahead of a move to Spain, heis form improved and he is now back to his best alongside the club captain.

Then last month Konate returned early from compassionate leave to score in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Newcastle. It was emotional for him, his teammates and all of us watching the game.

“We are friends, we speak about everything, it’s a process. Let’s see what comes out of it. It’s never that easy,” said Van Dijk.

“It’s never that easy that we can just say get it done, it’s a process and we’ll see what comes out of it.

“Obviously I want him to stay, he’s an important figure on the pitch, but off the pitch as well.

“He’s one of the leaders, he’s an outstanding – in my eyes – world-class centre-back, so I can do only so much.

“It’s in the club’s hands together with his agent and himself so let’s see what comes out of it.”

Let’s hope he stays.
