Arne Slot: We need to create more chances

Liverpool boss Arne Slot emphasised the need to make more of their chances ahead of Saturday afternoon’s home clash with Burnley.

The Reds are unbeaten in their last 11 games in all competitions, but have often looked fortunate to get a result, even at times against Barnsley in the FA Cup last week.

“Today’s game comes on the back of a run of form that has allowed us to stabilise after a difficult period, but at the same time we are very much aware that there are levels that we still need to reach.

“This was again clear in our most recent game at home to Barnsley. The result was good, we scored four excellent goals, and we were very happy to reach the next round of the FA Cup, but we cannot and will not ignore those areas of our performance that we need to improve.

“Key to this is finding ways to ensure that the amount of possession we have is matched by the number of chances we are able to create.

“That is one of the main challenges that English football brings right now and it is one which we encountered against today’s opponents in the opening weeks of this season.”

Why are Liverpool not as clinical as last season?

A high offside count is an indication of attacking players not gelling, mistiming runs and not paying attention to the opposition’s defensive line.

Liverpool are currently the top club in the Premier League for offside decisions, with 49 and six times in four of their last 12 matches.

Mo Salah was flagged offside four times in November’s 3-0 defeat at Man City, when the Reds were trying to turn the game around.

However, Cody Gakpo is the worst offender, with 13 so far this season.

This is one of the key issues Slot has to resolve over the coming weeks if Liverpool are to improve on their current position.
