This is the big one. There is no such thing as a “friendly” when we head to Old Trafford, but the stakes for Sunday feel particularly heavy. With only four matches left in the season, the battle for the top four is reaching a boiling point, and taking three points off them in their own backyard would be the ultimate statement of intent.
The Stakes
As it stands, we are locked in a fierce scrap for Champions League qualification. Manchester United currently sit in third place on 61 points, while we are right on their heels in fourth with 58 points. Aston Villa are also lurking with the same points tally as us, making every single goal crucial.
United only need two points from their final four games to guarantee their spot in Europe’s elite competition. For them, a win on Sunday settles it. For us, victory at Old Trafford would see us pull level on points and seriously ramp up the pressure for the final fortnight of the campaign.
Squad News and Tactical Battles
Arne Slot has our boys playing a little better lately. Florian Wirtz has started to settle into his role since arriving at the start of the season, providing that creative spark in the final third that complements the energy of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. Up front, Mohamed Salah remains our talisman though, if he’s fit, he’ll be looking to silence a few critics after a slightly quieter April by his own astronomical standards.
On the other side, Michael Carrick’s United team will be missing a key figure in Lisandro Martinez, who is serving the final game of a three-match ban. However, we have to be wary of their threat on the break. Benjamin Sesko has been clinical for them recently, and the pace of Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha – if the latter shakes off his hip issue – will test Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
Head-to-Head
The history between these two clubs needs no introduction, but recent form gives us reason to be cautious. Even though they managed a narrow 2-1 win at Anfield in October, we know we have the quality to overwhelm them if we find our rhythm.
Prediction
Old Trafford will be a cauldron, and they will be desperate to confirm their Champions League status at our expense. However, we’ve shown we can handle the pressure, and with the race for the top four so tight, I expect us to go there and take the game to them.
It won’t be easy, and it certainly won’t be quiet, but I’m backing the Reds to edge it.
