Historic World Cup shirt worn by Liverpool legend Roger Hunt set for auction

A historic England football shirt worn by legendary Liverpool striker Roger Hunt during the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign is expected to fetch up to £8,000 at auction this weekend.

The iconic white, long-sleeved jersey was worn by the prolific forward during the group stage match against France on 20 July 1966, in which he scored both goals to secure a vital 2-0 victory for the host nation.

Hunt, who is the second-highest goalscorer in Liverpool’s history, played an instrumental role in England’s historic tournament triumph, starting every single match and scoring three goals to help Sir Alf Ramsey’s side lift the trophy.

The striker won 34 caps for his country and scored 18 international goals before passing away in 2021 at the age of 83.

The shirt has exceptional provenance, having been gifted by Hunt to a local family with whom he lodged during his national service in the Wiltshire area.

The family remained lifelong friends with the forward and have kept the cherished piece of sporting history in their possession for six decades.

The auction is expected to attract significant interest from private collectors and football museums from around the world, with bids likely to exceed the initial estimates for such a rare piece of memorabilia.
