Former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has retired from football because of a heart condition.
Rafael Benitez signed Lucas from Gremio for £5m in 2007 and he went on to make 346 appearances over the course of 10 seasons at Anfield, becoming a fan favourite in his time at the club.
He moved to Lazio in 2017 before returning to his boyhood club Gremio last summer.
“I can only be thankful for the career I built,” Leiva said on Instagram. “The day has come to say goodbye to the field. I confess that it came from greater forces.”
