Liverpool’s World Cup stars set to miss start of pre-season training

Liverpool return for pre-season preparations under new boss Andoni Iraola on July 13.

However, with the exception of Wataru Endo, who left the Japan squad through injury last week, the remaining seven Liverpool players who are representing their countries at the World Cup are all expected to progress beyond the group phase.

The first knockout stage takes place from June 28 to July 3, and if players are afforded a three-week break when their tournament ends that would mean the earliest return date is July 20, one week after the rest of the squad.

Liverpool are likely to be in the United States themselves by that point, with three friendlies currently lined up.

The Reds will play Sunderland in Nashville on Thursday, July 25, Wrexham in New York on Sunday, July 30 and Leeds in Chicago on Sunday, August 2.

It’s quite possible that Iraola will give opportunities to some of the squad’s fringe players for the first one or two of those games.
