Former Red urges fans to show restraint

Former Liverpool defender and assistant manager Phil Thompson has urged fans not to celebrate at Anfield when the Reds claim the Premier League title.

It is possible that, if Man City lose against Arsenal on Wednesday night, Jurgen Klopp’s men could be crowned champions on Sunday, if they beat Everton at Goodison Park.

“Although Liverpool have a fantastic record against Everton, it still doesn’t matter,” said Thompson.

“Every derby, I’m sure every Everton fan was looking forward to it. ‘We’re going to beat Liverpool this time’, so it’s built up that.

“That fan atmosphere at Goodison Park has been vital to Everton. I appeal to every Liverpool fan, no matter if or when Liverpool win the title, don’t converge on Anfield.

“That has to be right and we have to all look at each other and go ‘no’. We need people to look at us as supporters and say ‘yes, you can trust us’.”
