It wasn’t the best performance, but it was a gritty three points claimed at a ground that no other away team has won at this season.

Virgil van Dijk‘s second-half goal, deflected off a defender, was the difference on the night as Liverpool struggled to break down a 10-man Sunderland defence for most of the game.

The home side finally ventured beyond their own half once they went a goal behind as the Reds sat back, relying on breakaways to extend their lead, but they didn’t come.

However, the win moves Liverpool two points closer to Man Utd and Chelsea, who both drew on Tuesday night, as the competition for a Champions League qualifying place hots up.
