The Shankly Gates

The Shankly Gates were unveiled at Anfield on August 26 1982 to pay tribute to Bill Shankly, the man who single-handedly turned Liverpool Football Club from a struggling second division side into the greatest team in English history.

Shankly’s widow, Nessie formally unlocked the Gates in a quiet ceremony with the late John W. Smith, Graeme Souness and Bob Paisley.

Across the Gates are the words ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, the Gerry and the Pacemakers’ hit that Liverpool fans adopted as the Club’s anthem.

In 2016 the Shankly Gates were moved from the corner of the Main Stand and Anfield Road to the corner of the Anfield Road and Centenary Stand when the new Anfield Road Stand expansion was built.

“The gates are a fantastic tribute to my granddad’s outstanding contribution to the football club,” said Bill Shankly’s granddaughter Pauline Robinson at the time.

“He loved the club and the supporters. We’d like to thank them for involving us in finding their new location.”
