Could Milner return to Liverpool with new manager?

Andoni Iraola’s move to Liverpool is imminent according to reports, with talks ongoing ahead of an announcement before the World Cup next week.

The outgoing Bournemouth boss is clear favourite for the job and his current availability is almost certainly the reason for FSG’s prompt dismissal of Arne Slot on Saturday.

However, we may well see James Milner joining his backroom staff. The former Liverpool player announced his retirement from football on Monday morning and rumours are spreading that he could be heading back to Anfield in a coaching capacity.

However, earlier this year, when asked about his future after hanging up his boots, Milner said:

“I’ve done my badges and things like that. Some days I think it’s a really good idea, other days you see people getting a new contract and managers getting sacked six weeks later. That doesn’t look too appealing.

“Jurgen Klopp always said to me that whenever you finish, it’s important you have a rest when you’ve been 100 miles an hour for as long as I have. So I think whenever that happens, that will be the first port of call and we’ll see where we go from there.”

So it may be some time before we see him in the dugout, but one day we just might…
